Analytics and announcements

Know who read what you shipped, and put the important releases in front of the right people.

The numbers#

Open Changelog analytics in the dashboard. For the last 7, 30 or 90 days it shows, for every release:

  • Page: views of the release page.
  • Widget: times it was opened from inside your app.
  • Emailed, opens, clicks and click rate: for the whole life of the release.
  • Reactions and asked for (requests the release closed).
  • Announcement results: how many saw, opened and dismissed it.

At the top, a few sentences say what stands out: the release that reached the most people, your email click rate and releases that were emailed but never clicked. Nothing is invented; with too little data it says nothing.

Email tracking#

Release emails to subscribers include a one-pixel image (opens) and a “Read it online” link that counts the click and then goes to the release page. Each link carries a random reader id, never an address, and a signature so the counts cannot be inflated. The link can only ever lead to the release itself.

Turn tracking off in Settings: emails then have no image and plain links. Plain-text email never carries tracking.

Announcements#

On a release, tick Announce it in your app. The widget shows it once to each visitor. Choose:

  • Style: a popup beside the button, a banner across the top, or a centred modal.
  • Pages: one path per line. /billing is one page; /settings/* is that section and everything under it. Empty means everywhere. The widget notices page changes in single-page apps.
  • End date: after it, the announcement stops showing.
  • Group: set under Who is this for?. A release aimed at a group such as plan:pro stays off the public changelog, feeds and subscriber email, and shows only to signed-in customers in the group (see Verified users).

Closing an announcement or opening it marks it seen in that browser. Escape closes a modal.

Export#

Export CSV on the analytics page downloads one row per release for the range you chose.
