# AI release notes from your pull requests

> Shipnoted writes release notes from your merged GitHub pull requests: it collects them as you work, drafts user-facing notes grouped as New, Improved and Fixed, leaves out chores, and links the requests you answered. Nothing is published until you approve it.

## How it works

1. **Connect GitHub.** Install the Shipnoted GitHub App on the repositories you choose. It needs pull requests (read) and issues (read and write), and cannot read your code.
2. **Merges collect.** Each merged pull request is added to a rolling draft release.
3. **Tag a release** (or press the button) and the notes are written for your users: plain words, grouped as New, Improved and Fixed.
4. **Review.** You read the draft next to a live preview of the public page, edit it, and publish or schedule it.

## What it will not do

- It does not invent details. The writer sees only pull request titles, labels and descriptions, and is told never to add anything that is not in them.
- It does not publish on its own. Every draft waits for you.
- It does not mention chores such as dependency bumps, unless you say so.

## From the command line, CI or your coding agent

```bash
npx shipnoted release draft --since v1.3.0
```

The [CLI](/docs/cli) drafts from git tags, the [GitHub Action](/docs/github-action) writes notes on every tag, and the [MCP server](/docs/mcp) lets Claude Code or Cursor read your feedback and draft releases.

## Limits

The Free plan includes 3 AI drafts a month, Pro 60 and Team 300. Connecting GitHub is part of Pro and Team.

## Questions and answers

### How does AI write release notes?

Shipnoted reads the titles, labels and descriptions of your merged pull requests and drafts user-facing notes from them, grouped as New, Improved and Fixed. You review and edit the draft before it is published.

### Can the AI make things up in release notes?

It is told to use only what is in your pull requests and never to add details that are not there. You also read every draft, and the live preview shows exactly what readers will see.

### What access does the GitHub connection need?

Pull requests (read) and issues (read and write). It cannot read your code, and you can remove the app from GitHub at any time.

### Can I generate release notes in CI?

Yes. The shipnoted CLI and the GitHub Action write release notes from your git tags in a workflow, and can publish and email automatically if you ask them to.

### Do I need to use AI to write release notes?

No. You can write every entry yourself in the editor. The AI draft is a starting point you can ignore.
